Issue Date: Abstract (summary): This thesis presents a theoretical study of superconductivity in UPt3 Hexagonal UPt3 is observed to have two superconducting transitions in zero applied field as temperature is reduced. This has established UPt3 as an unconventional super conductor (a superconductor in which the order parameter is not invariant under spatial operations).

The authors have determined the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the susceptibility, on the TS temperature dependence of the spin-fluctuation resistivity, and on superconductivity in UPt3. Superconducting classes of UPt 3 are discussed theoretically by considering the recent neutron experiment that the system exhibits antiferromagnetism (AF) above T c which coexists with superconductivity.

We enumerate group-theoretically pairing states allowed under the AF and characterize these in light of the general coexistence by: 1.

UNi 2 Al 3, which was discovered in by Geibel et al., reveals a coexistence of superconductivity and a spin-density-wave (SDW) type of magnetic ordering with T SDW = K. A few experiments on the SC properties in UNi 2 Al 3 have been reported so far owing to the difficulty of preparing a high-quality single crystal.

We investigate the topological aspect of the spin-triplet f-wave superconductor UPt 3 through microscopic calculations of edge- and vortex-bound states based on the quasiclassical Eilenberger and Bogoliubov–de Gennes theories. It is shown that a gapless and linear dispersion exists at the edge of the forms a Majorana valley, protected by the mirror chiral symmetry.
